Musician. Advice columnist. Social-media wag. Storyteller. Fame survivor. Join us as we go in deep with the Eve 6 singer and seemingly tireless multi-hyphenate.
Max Collins has been a staple in modern rock since the late 1990s and isn’t letting up. From fronting the iconic band Eve 6 (25 years after its release, you probably still have the melody of “Inside Out” stuck in your head) to penning advice columns and even stirring the pot on social media, Max is a seemingly inexhaustible force of nature. Plus, he’s super cool and funny!
I had the pleasure of picking his brain on a variety of topics, ranging from his music career to writing, sex positivity and what’s coming next.
HUSTLERMagazine: You’re that guy from that thing! How’s life going for you right this very second?
Max Collins: Life is good, Missy. I’m currently sitting on my porch with my dog Josh, enjoying some full-flavored tobacco and answering questions from a fierce and beautiful woman. It doesn’t get much better than this, to be honest.
Let’s start at 1998, which was a pretty damn eventful and exciting year for you and your Eve 6 bandmates. What was that sudden rise to fame like, and the subsequent years?
Well it was a bunch of seemingly contradictory things all at once, really. Exciting, terrifying, joyful and heartbreaking. It never felt deserved and it probably wasn’t, so like there was some pride, but it was also mingled with embarrassment. We were kids. We had no idea what we were doing. The whole thing was an accident and it was over before we knew it, but in the last analysis it’s pretty cool to have had a moment in the public consciousness because of a thing you made.
