Sex Mythbreakers: Fucking After 50

Sex is often represented (especially in the media) as a young person’s pursuit, but with people living longer and remaining more sexually active into older age, a whole new generation of silver-haired sex fiends is emerging. As a result, the saying, “There may be snow on the rooftop but there is fire in the furnace” has never been more apt. As part of HUSTLERMagazine.com’s Sex Mythbreakers quest for the carnal truth, this week we take a look at some of the fallacies that exist around sex and the older generation.

In the recent HBO dramedy Mrs. Fletcher, based on Tom Perrotta’s bestselling novel of the same name, a middle-aged woman rediscovers her sexual desire through a means of both digital and physical experimentation. The show, as described by HBO, is a “dual coming-of-age story, exploring the impact of internet porn and social media on the lives of an empty-nest mother, and her college freshman son.” While the tale of her son’s sexual misadventures remained an exploration of oft-examined teenage trials, the journey of the titular character’s experiences was genuinely intriguing and eye-opening, and exposed a long-standing myth when it comes to the older generation.

MYTH: Older people don’t have or don’t enjoy sex.

FACT: Older people love sex and, just as wisdom comes with age and experience, ability and understanding of sexual development also flourishes in one’s later years. While the stereotypes of limp-lapped old men popping Viagra in desperate pursuit of a hard-on have often been used as the butt of the joke in Hollywood comedies, the truth is that those Baby Boomers are bangin’, no matter what the youngsters may think.
