As a stand-up comic, Sam Morril has appeared everywhere—Conan, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Late Late Show With James Corden, Last Call With Carson Daly, Lights Out With David Spade… But he’s also an actor, whose most notable role was in 2019’s Joker, where Sam spread his thespian wings and took on the role of…stand-up comic. Most recently he bypassed the entire comedy industry to self-produce his own successful specials, I Got This and Up on the Roof. Sam took the time to Zoom with us at HUSTLER and share his thoughts on growing up in Gotham, the best time to drop an abortion joke and the unexpected geniality of Joaquin Phoenix.

SAM MORRIL: Yeah, I’ve seen The People vs. Larry Flynt, so I know how this goes…
You identify yourself as a comic, an actor and “a gentleman” on your website. What does that mean exactly?
I don’t know. I think I wrote that ten years ago, and I thought it was funny, but I don’t think it’s aged well. That was pre-Me Too, and I was just like, hey, I’m a decent guy, but now I’m like, wait, am I making some point there? It does feel like a lot.
You grew up in New York City, so were you one of those kids riding the subway alone at ten years old?
