More than four decades into their musical journey, Steven and Jeff McDonald are having a major moment with a new album, memoir and documentary.
Weirdos, rejoice! Hawthorne, California’s other musical sons (who are real life brothers), Redd Kross, are having a major moment right now. First there is the quirky and honest documentary Born Innocent: The Redd Kross Story. Then there is a brilliant new 18-track self-titled album (cheekily nicknamed The Redd Album). And if that wasn’t enough, there is also a book, Now You’re One of Us: The Incredible Story of Redd Kross. All of this serves to celebrate the 45th anniversary of rock’s most underrated and vitally important band. Amid this remarkable resurgence, HUSTLERMagazine.com caught up with the brothers McDonald—Steven on bass and vocals, Jeff on guitar and vocals—to discuss their long and often strange trip.
HUSTLERMagazine.com: Are you okay being interviewed by us?
Jeff: Yes. It’s an honor.
Steven: Oh yeah.
Do you remember the first time you ever saw a HUSTLER Magazine?
Jeff: Oh, yes. We grew up in the 1970s near Northrop, and there were many aerospace employees who would gather at the local liquor and convenience store parking lots after work to buy booze, cigarettes and magazines. And leave them behind.
