Dating sucks. Let’s just be absolutely clear about that. It’s like job hunting—there’s the initial messaging back and forth, the pre-screening of the candidate, the awkward first meeting and the grueling “interviews” that almost always end in disappointment. If not for cocktails and half-priced apps, dating would be intolerable. It’s a nonstop grind of trying to find someone who likes you—or, more importantly, someone you can tolerate for more than two drinks without jabbing a salad fork into your eye.
It’d all be so much easier, we’d wager, if people were just brutally honest from the start. Imagine logging onto a dating app and seeing, “I’m clingy, bipolar, drink too much, and if things work out between us, I’m going to expect you to attend no less than 27 family functions a year.” At least you’d know what you’re getting into. But no. That ain’t happening. Everyone’s too busy polishing their profiles and curating their “best selves,” hoping you’ll buy their act long enough for them to slowly start to reveal the weird, messy human that truly lies beneath.
