Brothel: The word conjures up visions of elegantly decorated rooms filled with beautiful women lounging about, waiting to provide extreme pleasure for a price. But how true to life is that picture? And what is the view from the other side? We interview four sex workers from three legal brothels and find out what their day-to-day life is really like.

HUSTLER: For readers new to the world of brothels, can you describe one for us?
SARAH SIERRA: A brothel is every man’s fantasy—a sordid sorority house full of women eager to have sex with them! It’s a business where full-service sex workers work as independent contractors, renting a room from the brothel to see clients in. Women may work from appointments with suitors who have reached out to them prior to their visit. But a large amount of business is walk-in, where clients without appointments will be introduced to the available workers via a “lineup.” Brothels often have on-site amenities for the workers, such as gyms, pools, a kitchen, laundry service and car service. It acts as the grounds for the legal sexual services, facilitating the work of the sex workers.
