The Mission UK frontman discusses his decades-long career, his plans for a new record and whether his group is goth or not.
Goth godfathers The Mission UK are back! The 1980s band, best known for their brilliant live shows and powerful arena-rock songs such as “Tower of Strength,” “Butterfly on a Wheel” and “Deliverance,” are on the road and working on their first studio album since 2016.
HUSTLERMagazine.com sat down with The Mission UK’s lead singer/songwriter Wayne Hussey at The Viper Room during soundcheck before the band’s secret show. We chatted about his pre-Mission days in Dead or Alive and Sisters of Mercy, the impact of men’s magazines on England in the ’70s and if The Mission UK are still goth.
HUSTLERMagazine.com: Are you okay being interviewed by us?
Wayne Hussey: Yes. Yeah, I’m okay. It’s about music, right? Not tits and stuff.
Do you have any history with the magazine or Larry Flynt?
Craig [Adams, Mission UK bassist] seems to remember that, many years ago, we went to the HUSTLER offices. Must have been 1990? He believes we went out to dinner, or lunch, with Larry Flynt. I have no memory of that.
