The Replacements and Guns N’ Roses veteran discusses his adventures in rock and why he’s keeping it basic with his new band, Cowboys in the Campfire.
Most known musicians’ resumes pale in comparison to that of Tommy Stinson. As a teenager he joined his older brother Bob in Minneapolis’ brilliant but criminally underappreciated group The Replacements. That band churned out eight genre-defining albums. He also stepped in to manage the bass duties for 16 years in Guns N’ Roses. Somewhere between those two epic musical moments, Tommy led the ultra-cool bands Bash & Pop and Perfect. If that wasn’t enough, Stinson has released some excellent solo albums and was also part of Soul Asylum.
Never one to rest on his laurels, Tommy is back with a brand-new band, Cowboys in the Campfire. HUSTLERMagazine.com caught up with him to discuss the Cowboys, playing live and if there will ever be another Replacements reunion.
HUSTLERMagazine.com: Are you okay being interviewed by us? And do you have any history with the magazine or Larry Flynt?
Tommy Stinson: Of course. And no. Not at all. Not yet. (Laughs.)
Where does this morning find you?
Are we talking literally speaking or figuratively speaking? I’m on the fucking corner of desperation and hell freezing over. Geographically, I’m in Hudson, New York.
