The Dream Syndicate frontman on L.A.’s fabled Paisley Underground scene, his swinger father and the new deluxe reissue of his band’s landmark album Medicine Show.
In Southern California in the 1980s, a very 1960s-sounding musical movement took place. It was dubbed “the Paisley Underground,” and the scene featured many bands who blended power pop sensibilities with retro, jangly guitars. The best-known bands of that enclave were Rain Parade, The Bangles, The Three O’Clock and The Dream Syndicate.
Steve Wynn, the leader of that latter band, called in to HUSTLERMagazine.com in advance of the four-CD reissue of the band’s second album, Medicine Show, to discuss the reissue, his dad the swinger, covering Blue Oyster Cult and what’s next.
HUSTLERMagazine.com: Are you okay being interviewed by us?
Steve Wynn: Thoroughly okay. I’ve been looking forward to this. My wife Linda, who is the drummer in my solo band and my other band, The Baseball Project, wanted me to mention that she frequently wore a HUSTLER T-shirt back in our earliest touring days. My mother also has a HUSTLER T-shirt.
Please thank your wife and mother for supporting the brand.
They both say you’re welcome.
