The genre-melding artist behind “F*Me” talks pushing musical boundaries, touring with Charli XCX and the power of saying no.
If you encounter Blane Muise or her music in the wild, you would not guess that she goes by the moniker Shygirl. Some of her best songs include “Shlut,” “Coochie (A Bedtime Story)” and the new offering “F*Me.” And her first classic was 2019’s “Uckers,” in which she declares, “I don’t give a fuck about you / But I really keep on fuckin’ till I fuck all of you” over a beat that sounds like “Macarena” remixed by Public Enemy’s Bomb Squad.
Straddling the hip-hop and hyperpop worlds in more ways than one, her casually hooky tunes are equally suited to dance clubs and avant tinkering, which explains how one side of her output showcases twisty collaborations with Björk and Arca, and the other puts her in league with R&B stalwart Tinashe and her pal Charli XCX. On Nymph_o, the deluxe edition of her excellent 2022 debut album Nymph, she corrals these extremely different A-listers onto the same record.
Last year, Shy found herself at the center of a storm opening for Charli XCX on her Sweat Tour just as everyone in the music press threw themselves behind Charli XCX’s Brat, both widely considered 2024’s best album and a highly memeable phenomenon that led to catchphrases like “Kamala Is Brat.” Performing for the biggest audiences of her career synced up with Shygirl’s dance-minded 2024 EP Club Shy and its just-released sequel Club Shy Room 2, which boasts some of the most high-energy, floor-ready music Muise has ever put out.
Shygirl spoke to HUSTLERMagazine.com via Zoom about her new music and maintaining world-historic levels of cool when Madonna’s just a phone call away—or when she has to go around promoting a love song to an ex.
HUSTLERMagazine.com: Do you prefer to be called Blane or Shy?
Shygirl: Shy. Everyone calls me Shy.
