Attorney General Jeff Sessions is waging federal war on states that have legalized marijuana for recreational consumption. Meanwhile, Trump has declared the opioid crisis to be a national emergency. What’s wrong with this picture?
A study funded by the National Institutes of Health shows that legalized medicinal pot actually reduced opioid overdose deaths. Marijuana has been used successfully to treat chronic pain in patients with cancer and other serious illnesses, and no one has ever overdosed on cannabis. But none of this evidence puts a dent in Sessions’ backward brain, who mused that, “Good people don’t smoke marijuana.” Maybe he’s never heard of these successful pot partakers: Richard Branson, Michael Bloomberg, Ted Turner, Stephen King, Arnold Schwarzenegger and even Barack Obama—not to mention all of the famous artists and musicians who toke regularly.
