Speak Up, America!
I am sick to death of seeing our rights erased in America. Gains we fought long and hard for are being curtailed and crushed in the blink of an eye, historically speaking. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 has been decimated. Women’s reproductive rights have been stripped away. And now freedom of speech has been walked back to where we are no longer really free to speak…unless, of course, that speech meets with President Trump’s approval.
My husband, Larry Flynt, battled all the way to the Supreme Court to expand the parameters of the First Amendment with Hustler Magazine v. Falwell, a case the Justices unanimously decided in his favor in 1988. This landmark decision protected parody from claims of emotional distress by public figures and celebrities. It is because of this decision that you are free to watch and laugh at political commentators/comedians today—like Jon Stewart, Jimmy Fallon, John Oliver and, yes, Jimmy Kimmel.
