Governor Newsom Turns the Tables
As we discussed in the December 2021 Publisher’s Statement, our ultraconservative Supreme Court recently upheld the draconian Texas law that outlaws most abortions after a “fetal heartbeat” is detected (at about six weeks). The law allows private citizens with no legal standing—meaning no personal interests involved—to sue any doctor or individual who participates in an abortion.
In what is certain to be a shock to conservatives and Second Amendment absolutists everywhere, California Governor Gavin Newsom has instructed his staff to work on a similar law that would allow private citizens to sue anyone who manufactures, sells or distributes assault weapons or ghost gun kits in California. Ghost gun kits are assemble-at-home kits designed to evade all gun laws—they are untraceable and can be purchased online or at gun shows without background checks. If the antiabortion law in Texas becomes the new standard for protecting “sanctity of life,” then California’s law should likewise be adopted, to protect the hundreds of people shot every single day in America and mitigate the recent surge in homicides from gun violence.
