The fight for human rights is a broad and complicated battle. Basic, inalienable freedoms many of us take for granted are constantly under attack by those who seek to silence and suppress. Democracy, reproductive rights, racial equality—even adultery. Sure, cheating may be ethically dubious, but it’s a choice any consenting adult should be allowed to make without fear of incarceration.
And so we applaud the legislators in Taiwan, who took a long overdue step back from interfering in the private affairs of husbands and wives. Taiwan News informs us that on May 29, Taiwan’s grand justices ruled that “Article 239 of the Criminal Code violates the constitution and should be ended immediately, effectively decriminalizing adultery.” The response was immediate—and hilarious.
