Not all users are equal in the eyes of social media, and no one knows this better than the oft-fucked-over sex workers whose accounts are arbitrarily deleted or suspended simply by virtue of what they do for a living. The situation peaked last spring when nearly 200 adult performers added their usernames to a letter aimed at Facebook and Instagram after their accounts had been removed without explanation.
Silenced but not silent, the Adult Performers Actors Guild (APAG) got organized. First the letter, sent April 22 to Facebook by APAG’s legal counsel. It noted the unexplained terminations and complete lack of transparency for the decision, while underscoring the utter hypocrisy of maintaining Instagram users like Kim Kardashian—arguably the richest sex worker in the world—who can pretty much do whatever the hell she wants.
