Remember Ossuary Angel from the May 2022 issue (“Chills ’n’ Thrills”)? The flesh-eating vampire of your dreams (Vania, 2019) is back and bloodier than ever in A Corpse for Christmas (Blood Sick Productions), a punk-as-fuck slice of extreme horror that makes Pasolini’s Salò feel like a lighthearted romp.
Angel plays Anri, a Philly metalhead who does the wrong bump and loses their head. It’s a grimy, sadistic, shot-on-video splatterfest with lots of laughs and enough putrid ultraviolence to choke a horse. (Note: No horses were harmed during the making of this film.) It’s even getting a VHS release!
Of course, extreme horror is a very, shall we say, acquired taste. One doesn’t necessarily love raw oysters on the first attempt—certain flavors and textures take some getting used to. To this end, Angel has kindly assembled a primer package for easing you into the darkest of film genres. From streamlined and glitzy to digestible, sleazy fun, here are their favorite “extreme adjacent” films for beginners who want to wet their toes before wading neck-deep into unrelenting gore.
